Annie Li

The central idea of my sustained investigation is how I have changed gradually and suddenly. As I started to plan for my future, I began to reflect on my childhood. What are the changes, whether good or bad, that have formed who I am today? Throughout my sustained investigation, I want to discover how the two types of changes impacted my growth in the last 18 years.

In image 1, I want to demonstrate my innocence by imaging myself with the children and animals that are being trapped by poverty. Back then, I thought all goals can be fulfilled if I work hard. Just like how I believed that my ballet dream would ultimately come true. Everything suddenly changed in 2013. I was diagnosed with scoliosis, then my dance dream ended. Image 4 is a series of paintings illustrating my depression, my spine, and the brace that I wore for 3 years. I portrayed my struggle with giving up my dream in image 7. I felt lost in the world that I am not unique, people are always being controlled and limited by rules. I spent 5 years to gradually alter my future career to art. Image 10 shows the four different meanings of hands, while they are also symbolizing my way of becoming an artist.
