Mia Diaz

My work analyzes my relationships with others and how their expectations impact my identity’s development. It started as a focus on hindering expectations, then evolved to portraying the duality of expectations.

Images 1 and 2 were created before I finalized my investigation question. Often I create artwork pertaining to how I see myself. I realized my identity was being obscured by the expectations of others; their influence on my life choices resulted in me feeling a lack of fulfillment. Image 5 was an exploration of using various white mediums to portray appearing perfect. In doing so, I felt like I was concealing my identity. My later artwork focused on portraying the strain in my relationships. I used coils and string to represent the complexity of relationships. My relationships become overwhelming when both of our expectations are misunderstood and unintentionally damaging. Image 8 represents tension in my developed and undeveloped relationships. Image 9 is a self reflection, now aware of my expectations I set to appease others.
